Commentary and Media
Great commentary abounds on the Internet, from both traditional media and blogs. Here’s a sampling of the most relevant:
- Appetite for Profit: A book and blog by Michele Simon, a public health lawyer who writes about the food industry and food politics.
- Civil Eats: Features articles on food politics.
- Jane Black: Food writer covering food politics and sustainability issues.
- Labor is Not a Commodity: A collaborative labor rights blog by the International Labor Rights Forum, STITCH, Sweatfree Communities, and the US Labor Education in the Americas Project.
- Marion Nestle: Author of several books, including Food Politics, and a well-respected food and nutrition expert.
- Mark Bittman: New York Times opinion columnist, and author of Food Matters: A Guide To Conscious Eating as well as multiple cookbooks (including one of my favorites, How to Cook Everything Vegetarian). His blog includes his columns — which veer political, and are good! — as well as food writing.
- Politics of the Plate: A blog by writer Barry Estabrook, who also wrote the recently published Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit, which includes an examination of working conditions in US tomato fields.
- The Food Times: Public service project that curates online food news.
- Tom Laskawy: writer at Grist covering food and agricultural policy, as well as cofounder of the Food & Environment Reporting Network.
- Tom Philpott: A cofounder of Maverick Farms and current food and ag blogger for Mother Jones magazine.
- Triple Crisis Blog: Collaborative blog on crises in finance, development, and the environment.
- Wasted Food: Blog about food waste in the United States, written by Jonathan Bloom, author of American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of its Food (and What We Can Do About It).
